Description

Spanish poppies are adorable perennial flowers that are much tougher that they appear. In late spring, delicate, ruffly, tangerine flowers emerge on long, wiry stems. The plants form small clumps with green toothed leaves. They look very charming along rocky borders with cheerful orange flowers gently waving in the breeze. Their native habitats are rocky cliffs and crevices so they can tolerate poor soil as long as it is well-draining. Blooming continues throughout summer. Then the flowers give way to small, conical seed pods with thousands of tiny seeds inside each pod.

Spanish poppies are drought tolerant once established and increase in size and number each year as they begin to spread via seeds. Very little maintenance is needed. In the spring, I usually clear some space around them to encourage self sowing.

    Cultivation

A sunny spot and well draining soil are Spanish poppies’ only requirements. Their ideal location is a rocky or dry garden. The plants are small so to establish a large patch, encourage self sowing by removing weeds and do not cover the ground with too much mulch.

    Propagation

    Spanish poppies propagate by seeds.

    Seed Saving

Seeds can be collected in August/September when the pods are completely dry. Cut the pods off and thresh seeds by crushing them open with your fingers or collect several pods into a bucket and stomp on the pods to release the seeds. If cleaner seeds are desired, screen with a fine mesh sieve and winnow as necessary.
